How to Fill Holes in Wood before Painting then Finish Sanding

Homeowners would enjoy it if a wooden house did not require much more than a little bit of home maintenance. Only caulk and scrape a bit, toss down some sheeting for paint drips, and apply a few coats of outdoor acrylic paint.

Well, it just is not so easy. For a wide variety of reasons, one almost always has to repair the wooden facings of the house.

This house of mine had to have more than just some new paint. The steel sheeting near the roof gutters was badly done and permitted rain to soak the wood behind the eve. As the house aged, the wood became rotten and the protective coat of paint flaked.

I researched how to get it done right. I was worried whether wood putty would do the job.

My friend down the block patched his wood facing boards many weekends to control termite infestations. Sam’s repairs stood the test of time. I wanted know why his repairs did not crack.

Use Bondo to Fill Wood then Use Cordless Sanders to Sand and Smooth

He said his brother had told him to use Bondo to fill any imperfections in the home’s surface. For some background see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bondo_(putty)

I knew how Bondo worked on cars. This auto filler kept its shape. Bondo permitted sanding and lathing. When he brought up using this auto filler, I instantly knew that repairs done this way would work.

Using Bondo, the method is to make repairs in layer after layer with big gobs initially and less material thereafter. Bondo allows you to form shapes with molds, combining molding boards and regular kitchen wax paper. To prep for painting by sanding purchase one of the best discount power tools that can sand quickly.

For those of you who own a wood deck, you should be aware that you can also apply this auto patcher to fill in gouges in the surface of your wood deck. It is sometimes necessary, when you are treating a wooden deck.

Note the fact that Bondo has a distinctive light reddish color and that will be what you see, when using a transparent water sealant on your wood deck. If you want to waterproof a lumber deck that has Bondo, you will get the best results with prime and painting.

Also you do not need to find an automotive store for Bondo. You can get Bondo at Home Depot or Lowes. By the way, my wood repair still looks great after several years.
