Most homes have some type of concrete. Typically this is either a driveway or patio. Concrete is a great material to work with, but you may notice cracks or discolorations overtime; these imperfects are unattractive and diminish the overall look of a home. Whether you simply want to make the home look better or you have to comply with home owner’s association regulations, there is a need to repair or replace the concrete in the affected area. However, completely redoing can be time consuming and expensive. Instead of an entire redo, opt for concrete resurfacing because you get a better looking area without the time, hassle, and huge costs.

Most contractors will give you a lower rate for a resurfacing project, as opposed to a complete replacement. But it gets even better; you do not need a professional contractor because you can do a quality concrete resurfacing job yourself! Most resurfacing projects call for just a weekends worth of work and you walk away with many benefits, including the avoidance of having to deal with various contractors to find the best rate.

When it comes to resurfacing concrete, you have two good choices. You can choose to mix your own from a combination of Portland cement, water and sand or gravel. You can also opt instead for a pre prepared mixtures where you only need to add water. The only problem with prepared mixes is that the buckets for resurfacing cements are designed for thin overlays only. This means that if you have large holes, gouges, or cracks, this may not work for you.

Start off with a clean surface, ensuring all debris is swept from the surface. For the best results, do all outside resurfacing work when the weather is not windy and cool. Next, the area should be slightly dampened and a thin layer of concrete glue is applied. Then, apply the concrete resurfacing mixture in a smooth and even fashion. While the area dries and sets completely, no traffic should be on or near the area. The end result is a flawless look; in fact, your concrete surface will look as good as new.

If done properly, your do-it-yourself resurfacing project will last for years. Resurfacing is better than replacing because you would have to remove the old concrete and then ensure the thickness is perfect for the area in question. The materials, supplies and labor involved can be very costly. However, concrete surfacing gives you a long-lasting, new appearance without the added expense.
