For some reason I cannot please the city that I live in as far as getting a permit pulled. I’ve been in there several times with things that they have told me I need to bring to apply for the permit. I’m at the point where I am just going to remodel my house without getting the permit because I don’t want to wast anymore of my time with them. I am wanting to know what is the worst thing that could happen to me if I go ahead with the job without the permit.

If it is outside where they can see it, they will make you tear it down
If you hire a contractor he will get the permit and take all the hassle

It depends on if it is inside or out, what state you live in. And if you got nosy neighbors who like to start trouble,

You can be made to pull down any work you’ve done.
It’s not worth changing anything structural until you have the permit.
Internal changes shouldn’t be a problem, unless its a heritage listed house. Then you’ll need a permit for everthing.

If you aren’t bulilding any additions or removing any load bearing walls you don’t even need a permit.
But, to answer your question, you’ll get fined for doing those things without a permit.
